Direct Selling

If you already read part 1 of this article you are aware of the different types of businesses you can get involved with online. In this part of the article I am going to talk about some of the elements that are required and recommended for each level of the online business model. Even though this article is about internet marketing, it is designed to give you a step-by-step understanding of what it is you are marketing.
The first type of site I am going to talk about is the most complex and most time consuming during setup, e-commerce sites. An e-commerce site is not a site that sells a single product, rather a collection of products both be it tangible or non-tangible items. There are three elements that are required in order to run an e-commerce business. You will need a website with a shopping cart, you will need tool to process payments and finally you will need a way to get your products to your buyer. Depending on what type of commerce you do, tangible or non-tangible items, you may be able to have what is called instant delivery. This of course is only possible with products that can be delivered electronically, such as music, books, videos and other electronic items. If you sell tangible items you will need to either ship the items yourself, or have a drop-shipper take care of that aspect.

The next type of online business is one that does not require a website, but would be suggested non-the less. This type of business is known particularly through one website called eBay. This is the auction or 3rd party seller. This means that you allow someone else to post your product online, using all of their tools in order to sell you products. The 3rd party takes care of the website, payment processing and the only thing left up to you is the shipping. The biggest one out there is eBay, but there are several other sites that will allow you to post your products with them and have people either bid on them or purchase them directly. The startup cost for this type of business model is minimal, and the long term value is minimal since you are not building a brand name or setting an image for yourself. This type of business can be great as a support business if you are looking to do more than just provide yourself with a "job" instead of building a business.
The last type of online business model is known as affiliate marketing. This is tied into one of the two above, where the owner of a website that sells products or services allows you to promote their business on a commission fee. Technically this type of online business model does not require anything from you other than the ability to fill out an application form, and then promote what is known as your affiliate link, on websites, emails or other places where you think you could find buyers for the product or service you are now promoting. This type of business model has been catching on like wildfire in a dry forest. Mainly because people think it is easy and a way for them to make money very quickly. Yet this type of business model requires just as much marketing savvy as the other two. It is easier in one aspect, which is that you are often provided with various tools to assist you in marketing the company, product, service or just the business in general, so you do not have to come up with anything other than an idea on where to put the advertisements.
All of the above require marketing savvy to make enough of an income to replace or improve your current one. In the next part of this article (part 3) we will cover some basics of marketing your online business model.
